One of the things I’m working on right now, when I’m not elbowing my way through a month’s backlog of house and other cleaning. Mucking is exactly the appropriate word! I hope it won’t land me with another month long backache, because then it’ll just be a selfperpetuating nightmare, won’t it. 😉
G was a bit sceptical that kitchen towels could be anything but white with blue stripes or plaid, but since he participates in wiping garage hands on them, I insisted this new batch should be darker than our current light blue terry cloth which are developing a yellow tint in the middle even with “white” washing powder. Mind you, I keep towels for decades, I’ve only recently retired some (they still mop up paint very well) that I got when I left my parents, and the dogs had the honour of wearing out my baby towels. I think 50 years of duty is pretty good. They just don’t make stuff like that anymore, so I thought I’d finally join the hype and weave my own set.
I agreed to use a sedate navy for the warp but went ahead planning crazy colours for the weft. Because really, I can’t work under such constraints… Here’s the first one in progress, you saw the yarn in my last post. Can you spot the threading error? I decided I’d keep it and see if it actually shows after it’s washed and contracted, then fix between two towels.
I’m also making a band for the loops, it’s a bit wide because I didn’t know how to calculate the “sett”, so next time I’ll use 20 cards instead of 28. The loops on commercial towels always break, this one will have to be sabotaged to come apart. I just hope I get my sewing machine back in time to hem the towels before they end up forgotten in a drawer.
Other than that I’m unsure where time has been going the last couple of weeks and why there’s been nothing to tell you about. Maybe I should begin a tada! list to document every night that I have in fact left my bed and moved of my own volition?
My sampler warp for testing tile patterns is also ready on the loom, I just need to begin pegging the treadles. 144 cords to be re-programmed every 30 cm of fabric or so. Yay. What fun!
Colour Cottage 
Love that colourway! I abhor towels of any sort that are white or pale–real life does not keep towels “pretty”!

my daughter “wears’ her baby and also those wraps are beautiful weaves…i have seen her appreciation to varying fabrics and the details to fibres…beautiful work. ~ smiles hedy

I think it’s a great idea with the baby wraps, little ones should not be isolated in separate rooms, it’s not natural.

i agree…and she uses long pieces of beautiful cloths…and her son who is growing loves being close in or on her back…it’s seems very natural to me too…your fabrics would be beautiful for that too…compose a beautiful day ~ smiles hedy

Our weaving guild is famous for a very large run of towels we made and sold at our local farmer’s market. We called them the coffee bar towels and they were brown or various mixtures of brown. We sold TONS of those towels because our local ladies all said they loved the idea that the inevitable stains on their kitchen towels would not be nearly as noticeable. We did finally run out of the giant cone of brown yarn and went on to other colors… but we still get requests (two years later) for our coffee bar towels.

I think we’ve all ruined a towel or two mopping up wine, coffee etc! (I just ruined a white one because my pot leaked yellow plant dye onto it)

those are going to be very pretty towels! No one will notice the thread count when they are drying their hands. 🙂

De fleste af vores håndklæder er også mørke 😉 Stropper – brikvævede stropper – det må jeg lave i juleferien Mine knækker *hele tiden*. Ugleungerne haler og hiver i dem, og de bliver slidt over på ingen tid.

It seems that all I want to weave is towels–love them! I wouldn’t’ve noticed the threading error if you hadn’t mentioned it . . .

I’d love to make many more things for daily use, but as with vegetable growing, I’m the only one who appreciates it, so it also feels like a waste of time somehow. Not because I need the validation, but it takes a bit of the fun out of it when I’m the only user.
