Time to get yourself outside early in the day or else! After adjusting our clocks, it’s now dark at 5 pm and counting down for the next two months. I’m still hoping to get some forest exercise in before it’s too cold (my lungs don’t take kindly to heavy breathing in frosty temps), but with rain, back pain, sick ponies and what else, my plans have been thwarted so far. I really don’t know why I keep making them!

I’ve been working on installing studio stairs instead of the ladder, but it’s still missing a banister at the top. I’ll show you when it’s done.

It’s untrue that I can only see the garage roof from the other side of my studio. If I stand on a step stool, lean very far out of the open window and look left, I can see more of this:

It’s end of week and I’m aiming at a quiet weekend. Not something I observe habitually, but it happens to fit. Continue reading →

Foliage of the week

– garden views for you today. I try to get my butt outside every time the weather lets up, even just for a short spell. And every year in October I just go nuts clicking at leaves, once I start I can’t seem to stop, 100’s of images and nothing to do with them! These are just the raw snaps, I hope to dive deeper into work on them later. Too many varied projects going on right now, so next task will be getting all my ducks in a row.

Too many people, not enough trees

The following quote is by Matthieu Ricard in his book “Happiness”. I don’t know whether the facts are actually true, but it’s certainly interesting in these times of iPads and global warming, and perhaps especially at this time of year.

Unlike GNP, the economic indicator that measures cash flow through an economy, GNH measures the happiness of the people as an indicator of development and progress. In order to improve the quality of life for its people, Bhutan has balanced cultural and environmental preservation with the development of industry and tourism. It is the only country in the world where hunting and fishing are banned throughout the land. That is a happy contrast to the two million hunters in France. (MR is a buddhist. Personally I’m not as opposed to “real” hunting as to factory farming and hobby shooting)

In addition, 60 percent of the land is required by law to remain forested.

In all fairness I suppose a lowly Android in heavy overcast weather will never compete with a real camera on a sunny day, but nevertheless, as I was on my usual dogwalk anyway…

The weather is too dark and dreary to be taking photos today, so you’ll have to wait a while for the first dye results I promised.

Instead I stumbled across an old photo, it was scanned from a negative many years ago when internet connections were much slower and hard drives a lot smaller, so I don’t have these images any larger.

I never could decide which version I liked the best, how about you? (maybe you don’t like them – that’s ok too)

I have so many negatives, so even if I can’t afford a new camera house when my current fails (hoping not to jinx it here, it’s definitely a senior), I do have image material enough to last me a lifetime of play in Photoshop. I just know I’d miss the thrill of the click…. 😉

Fall forage

autumn, brown, catkin, chestnuts, cone, country life, dogwalk, forest, nature, nut, seasons, trees

Just a bit of gathering while walking the dog, to keep me occupied during winter in case I get urges.

In addition to the chestnut hulls I brought home, I also gathered spruce cones from the forest.

AND I found one young alder tree on our property that had produced cones, so I got myself a bag of those too.

I then tried to strip the larch trees, but they were not quite ready to let go of their needles, and those which did mostly ended up on my sweater. Tricky! I’ll get back to them in a week or so.

Then I went foraging websites and ended up ordering this canning device with a thermostat, I’m guessing it’s real good for keeping madder root at it’s proper temp as well! Since the jars will be shut I’m wondering if I could use it for apple sauce too. Not sure if I’ve had actual mordants or acid dye in there, what do y’all think?

I’m not seeing any acorn reports people!
Walk in the forest today, there are also no chestnuts this year and hardly any of the Alder catkins I wanted to dye with. I guess those have to be scheduled for 2013…

Colour Cottage

I was planning on dyeing with acorns this fall, we have a big old oak tree on one side of the property. I know it’s way too early to harvest, but as I was walking by the other day I was expecting to be able to see them at least.

  • That’s not too early, is it?
  • Is this a Danish, European, worldwide 2012 phenomenon or just my neck of the woods? Seems that none of the rowan trees in the area are showing much in the berry department either, now that I come to think of it, regardless of variety.
  • So those of you with oak trees around – take a walk and send me a report! Pls and thanku.

I did however on the same walk discover that one of our wild patches suddenly sports quite a few St. John’s Wort. Nearly all finished by now of course, but…
