Vessels

When I have too much paper pulp and no time to start new figurines, I make vessels. The pulp gets smelly and gathers mould after a while, even in the fridge.

I have a thing for bowls and round things in general. I don’t own a lot of bowls, because I also believe in household simplicity. But I like making and sharing them all the same. I imagine channelling my inner neolithic woman as I work!

I began with the good old balloon method, covering plastic bottles, using lids or whatever as a base: “garbage to treasure”. Lately I’ve turned to making “innards” from old shipping boxes instead and cover them in pulp, or, as I plan to next time round: whatever comes to mind. Something with cloth or string?

What do you think? I thought I could use them to practise my decorating skills too, modelling, drawing, various paint and brush types. Who knows, perhaps something interesting and unique will emerge one day. Ideas abound faster than I can possibly create.

I’ll get more into depth about various options for making vessels, materials, pulp recipe etc. at a later date; as I mentioned I’m gathering photographic evidence first and getting my thoughts better organized in writing so that my promise doesn’t peter out halfway through.

Do you think the local thriftstore will ban me if I deliver a batch every time I’m done with them?!

Will there be yarny things happening still on this blog? I hope so. Just need to find the magic formula for keeping my fleshmobile up and running at a steady pace.

I have:

3 batches of blended wool for a sock experiment of breeds vs. durability. To be spun. If only I could remember what I put in those batts! (I just checked and I can only find 2 batches now) Jeez Louise. I think maybe I used scraps of Lincoln, silk and rainbow nylon as reinforcement fibers, but the main portion? And which is which? Could be that random chunk of SW Cheviot I found in my stash and dyed? When I do a thing I’m always convinced I’ll remember without having to take notes. Maybe I would if I weren’t curious about so.many.things.

I promised I’d begin my “new” blog by telling you about the event I participated in this November. (photos at the end)

About 2 months before, an art community that I subscribe to suddenly decided we should all do this together, set the date for mid-November, wham. Er, um, whut? I’m not ready for that. I don’t have the space to do that. I live out in the middle of nowhere and it will be dark and cold. I don’t have enough paintings to show. They’re not good enough. I don’t want strangers in my house! I also don’t want nosy neighbours from the next village in my house. There’s not enough time! I had other plans, I just want to finish my paint project.

But in the end I enlisted anyway. Just to see what would happen, to my stress levels, my self confidence, my work speed, my sense of privacy. What happens if you don’t wait until you’re perfect and ready? If chances arrive and you don’t take them, will they come back?

I’ve said it before, so it may sound hollow by now: I really want to get back to blogging again. Yes, the exact same spot where we left things at the beginning of the year. (I went back to look at my post from Nov. 2020 as well, but today I’ll be addressing things backwards)

Yet another planned post has been postponed today in favour of “smaller” stuff. And so it goes, lah dee dah.

I found a couple of skeins of undyed sock yarn that called to get stash busted, so first step was having fun with colour obviously. I decided to get a little ahead of times and do autumn colours – 4 skeins isn’t a lot to work with, considering I have about a million colour combinations waiting in my head, and then it turned out I had run out of 4 essential colours, so that’s a completely different kind of planning game.

uk This is an announcement of my new Danish website with a small shop for surplus production. You’re welcome to have a look, but I won’t be translating it. Possibly I’ll put up stuff for sale in here as well unless it grows enough to reopen my Etsy store. Any suggestions on that front? (when I began the draft for this post I probably knew what I meant by that question, now I don’t, but I’m going to leave it in case somebody else does)

citruses

Another month gone by, and no, I haven’t been very busy. At the moment I can’t even weave although I have projects started on both looms and more warps waiting. It’s driving me batty! But using my left leg aggravates my “whateverthehellisgoingonwithmybuttock”. So I do stretches, self-massages and some of that sitting down finishing work that I’m usually too lazy to get done.
